mforting feeling for a manager to have Allen at the backend
Time never stops. If anything it gains speed.
Baseball at least has found a civilized way to mark its passage. It s much more friendly than gray hair Cody Allen Jersey , artificial knees and wrinkles.
It seemed like only yesterday that Cody Allen was rocketing through three levels of competition in one season before making his big league debut on July 20, 2012. He was the reliever who could pitch anywhere in any situation.
On Saturday night Allen passed Eric Plunk to become the Indians franchise leader in relief appearances with 374. On Aug. 25, he struck out Kansas City s Jorge Bonifacio in the ninth inning to pass Plunk and become the franchise leader in strikeouts by a reliever with 461. On May 6, in another game against the Royals, he recorded his 100th save.
Setting franchise records in appearances and strikeouts does not happen overnight. The same goes for Allen s save total, which has grown to 115 and ranks fourth in club history. It just seems like it did.
Allen, low key as ever, said after Saturday night s 5 2 win over Detroit in which he earned a save, If Bryan Shaw had come to the organization a year sooner, you d be talking to him right now.
Shaw and Allen are the foundation of the Indians bullpen. They have combined to make 711 regular season appearances 364 for Shaw, 347 for Allen since 2013. Allen and Shaw have never been on the disabled list with the Indians.
The Indians drafted Allen, 28 , in the 23rd round in 2011 out of High Point University in North Carolina. He was the 698th player taken in the draft. Somebody got something right.

To pitch as much as Cody has over the last 5 1/2 years, you have to be durable, but most of all you have to be good, said pitching coach Mickey Callaway.
The baseball gods seem to have smiled on Allen. No trips to the DL and he s been able to spend the formative part of his career with one team.
It s awesome to be part of the same organization for an extended period time, said Allen. Especially in the bullpen. You don t see a handful of guys stay together for a long period of time. I feel very fortunate to have spent my 5 1/2 years in the big leagues in the same organization.
The shelf life of relievers can be short and unpredictable. Bullpens get torn down and rebuild all the time.
The Tribe pen, anchored by Allen and Shaw, has stayed fairly stable.
Every season http://www.indiansfanaticsapparel.com/zach-mcallister-jersey-c-9.html , especially in the bullpen, there s a lot of turnover, said Allen. Tito manager Terry Francona , Mickey and Chris Antonetti, president of baseball operations have shown a lot of faith in myself and Bryan and all the guys who have been down there for a few years. I just hope we can get the job done. I think for the bulk of our careers we have.
Allen is 2 6 with a 2.75 ERA in 57 appearances this season. He s tied for eighth in the AL with 23 saves in 27 chances. His 75 strikeouts in 55 2/3 innings are tied for 10th.
Strikeouts are part of my game, but it s a byproduct of pitching a lot, said Allen. Knock on wood, I ve been fairly healthy throughout my career. We ve got a great training staff and people here who stay on top of you. They teach you good routines and make you stick with it.
Allen s best pitches are a 93 mph to 95 mph fastball and a knuckle curve. But it s just not what he does on the mound that makes a difference.
When the Indians were looking for a closer last year at the trading deadline, Allen went to Antonetti and Francona and said he would step aside if they could get the pitcher they were after. The Indians traded for Andrew Miller, but Allen remained the closer.
This year when Miller was wearing down in the set up role, Allen went to Francona and told him he would set up and let Miller close so he wouldn t have to pitch as many innings.
The team should always come first, said Allen. It s kind of a culture thing. Tito has been here pretty much since I ve been here and that s pretty much everything he s instilled.
The guys who were here before me Josh Tomlin, Michael Brantley, Asdrubal Cabrera, Joe Smith. It was always, Hey, let s figure out ways to win games. If you win games, it s good for everybody.
Durability, two great pitches, and the right frame of mind. It has to be a comforting feeling for a manager to have Allen at the backend of the bullpen.
I can t tell you how much it means . I really can t, said Francona. That area of the team is so volatile. Yet with those guys Allen and Shaw it hasn t been. Whether it s performance or health guys usually can t answer the bell all the time.
Cody and Shaw, and Zach McAllister, too http://www.indiansfanaticsapparel.com/dan-otero-jersey-c-10.html , have been able to. I think a lot of it is hard work. They prepare themselves so well. Mickey and Jason Bere bullpen coach have a consistent throwing program. They don t take days off. They pay attention to it and I think it s paid off.
